Evgeni Petkov's Haute Couture Blooms

One of my favorite finds from Sofia Fashion Week was the young, energetic, and supremely innovative talent, Evgeni Petkov. My knowledge of Bulgarian fashion to date has essentially consisted of research on traditional textiles, embroidered folklore costumes, and Thracian gold. Evgeni's work was my first glimpse into contemporary haute couture in a city that sits at the gateway to the east while also now being a thriving new member of the EU.

The future of fashion design in Bulgaria looks fresh with Petkov's luxe-silk and chiffon creations that are both feminine and future-forward in their edginess and modern tailoring. The Spring/Summer 2009 collection also demonstrates just how gorgeous and diverse Balkan beauty can be. Stay tuned for more coverage on the designer's upcoming projects and plans to explore the fashion scene in London and other cities in Europe.
